Chapter 10: Defining his feelings ①

When Yan Yu woke up the next morning, the first thing he realised was that he was facing the window ledge instead of the wall. He sat up in an instant, surprised to find that he, who was supposed to be sleeping on the left side, woke up on the right side with a pillow in his embrace.
Chen Yifei just happened to walk out of the bathroom so Yan Yu asked him in astonishment, “How did I end up sleeping on the right side?”
“Maybe you like the right side more?” Chen Yifei replied, adding, “You can take the right side tonight.”
“Did I take up your space as well?”
“No, you only took the space after I woke up.”
Yan Yu nodded. He left the bed and walked into the bathroom, finding dark circles under his eyes when he looked into the mirror. Yan Yu patted his face and let out a sigh.
The meals offered on the cruise were normal. Naturally, they could not be compared to the food in proper restaurants back on land. On top of that, all the restaurants on the cruise had long queues. It was already past ten in the morning when the two walked down. The only Chinese restaurant already had a long queue along the corridor.
Chen Yifei went straight to the queue, while Yan Yu walked around the shops nearby as he felt too lazy to stand still and wait in a line. Yan Yu came across a shop that sold bags and wallets. Fortunately, the shop assistant knew a little Chinese since there were many Chinese customers on board.
Yan Yu recalled that Chen Yifei’s birthday was coming soon on the twentieth, so he thought he might as well buy a wallet for Chen Yifei as his birthday present. After contemplating for a while, he ended up choosing a brown leather wallet and asked the shop assistant to wrap it up.
It was then that Chen Yifei called him on the phone to tell him that it was their turn. When Yan Yu returned, Chen Yifei was already ordering for both of them.
The food Chen Yifei ordered was all based on Yan Yu’s taste. Yan Yu had a very good appetite and ate everything that had been ordered. Chen Yifei ate and drank tea at a comfortable pace. Seeing the paper bag next to Yan Yu’s feet, he asked, “What did you buy?”
“Nothing much, I just took a look.”
Since they did not have anything planned afterwards, Chen Yifei chose to return to the room while Yan Yu decided to follow him and sat on the deck chair on the balcony while filling in the breakfast card for tomorrow’s breakfast. Yan Yu suddenly recalled something and, with uncertainty in his voice, said, “Chen Yifei, let’s discuss something.”
“What is it?”
“Do you want to move into my house?”
Chen Yifei was stunned for a moment and turned around to look at Yan Yu in astonishment.
Yan Yu knew that it was a very sudden request, so he explained, “It seems quite troublesome for you to come to my house every day to fetch me and I have so many empty rooms in my house anyway. They’re all cleaned and it would be more convenient for you to stay with me.”
Chen Yifei was silent for a while before he answered, “Forget it. It’s not that troublesome.”
Yan Yu felt a little disappointed. Logically speaking, there was nothing for him to feel disappointed about. It was Chen Yifei’s business whether he wanted to move in or not. He also just broke up with his boyfriend recently, so it might even be inappropriate for Chen Yifei to move in with him anyway, but he could not help but feel that pang of disappointment.
But Yan Yu still wanted to try anyway, “You can even rent out your current place and earn some rent from there. Also, I promise to be more diligent, I will not leave everything for you to do.”
That had, indeed, sounded tempting to Chen Yifei. He rested his head on his arm, looked at Yan Yu and replied, “I’ll think about it.”
“Do that, do that. Do consider it.”
Chen Yifei looked at the blue wave hitting against the cruise ship. Then, he closed his eyes and asked, “Why did you think of that suddenly?”
“I don’t know. I just don’t want to live alone.”
Chen Yifei suggested, “Maybe it’s time you looked for a partner.”
Yan Yu lay down on the deck chair, “Maybe you’re right…”
“How about blind dates?”
Yan Yu shook his head, “Too much effort.”
Chen Yifei shrugged his shoulders and stood up as he replied, “I want to visit the theatre on the fourth floor. Do you want to come with me?”
Yan Yu did not have such elegant taste, nor did he have the energy, so he shook his head.
After Chen Yifei left, Yan Yu received a New Year’s greeting from a boss from another company with whom he had not come into contact with for a long while. He replied to the message simply and could not help but daydream as he looked at Chen Yifei’s photo which was his current message background.
Yan Yu was not that dull. He had already realised that Chen Yifei’s position had far exceeded that of an old classmate, an assistant, or even a friend in his heart. Yan Yu did not dare define Chen Yifei’s position in his heart anymore.
On the morning of the third day, the cruise ship finally stopped in Vietnam’s harbour. Unfortunately, the weather happened to be so cloudy that it started drizzling when they were passing through the immigration gate.
Although their main destination was the Mercure Danang French Village on the Bana Hills, they wanted to try the famous local coffee on the way there. Since it was both their first times there, they decided to sign up for a tour instead. After alighting the tour bus, Yan Yu was already itching to take pictures of everything during the short time the tour guide went to buy the group’s tickets.
Yan Yu happened to turn around to see Chen Yifei being surrounded by the young females from the same tour group who wanted to take a picture with him. Although Chen Yifei was unwilling, he felt bad for rejecting females from the same tour group so he reluctantly agreed.
Seeing how Chen Yifei would rather take pictures with them instead of with him, Yan Yu let out a grumble.
There were two cannons placed at the entrance of Bana Hills. As Yan Yu squatted at the edge of the meadow taking pictures, he felt a bottle of a cold drink on his neck, making him shiver. He looked back.
Chen Yifei looked at him, “Do you want some water?”
Yan Yu took the bottle of water and grumbled to him, “So, you do remember your boss, huh?”
Confused, Chen Yifei asked, “Since when did I forget about you?”
Seeing the tour guide waving his hand for everyone to gather, Yan Yu stood up and replied, “You didn’t, you didn’t. Let’s go back quickly.”
Yan Yu grabbed Chen Yifei’s arm and dragged him towards the crowd. Chen Yifei stared at Yan Yu’s hand that was pulling his own, his words stuck in his throat.
Unfortunately, the weather in Vietnam continued to worsen. The rain had gotten heavier by the time they arrived at the peak on cable cars. By the time the group arrived at the Mercure Danang French Village, it had already become a downpour. Through the rain, the tour group could only look at the cathedral from afar.
Yan Yu was pretty disappointed. The weather changed quite frequently on the peak, so it couldn’t be helped when it started raining again. But Yan Yu did not want to waste this opportunity so he bought a raincoat and a waterproof case for his phone, determined to look around despite the downpour.
“It’s better not to go out during such heavy rain,” warned Chen Yifei.
But Yan Yu protested, “Wouldn’t this trip be a waste then? A little rain is nothing.”
Hearing that, Chen Yifei thought about how that side of Yan Yu had not changed since the old days. Chen Yifei answered helplessly since he was sure that he could not stop Yan Yu anyway, “Then be careful to not catch a cold.”
“I have never been to the hospital for anything other than my allergies or the injuries I got from fighting.” Yan Yu laughed, “You, on the other hand, look too fragile. You should probably wait inside, away from the rain.”
Chen Yifei took a look at the rain pouring outside and he could not stop worrying about letting Yan Yu go alone. Chen Yifei let out a sigh and bought a raincoat as well, “I’ll go with you.”
Yan Yu teased, “I won’t take care of you if you get sick, alright?”
“I’m worried that you’ll get lost.”
Yan Yu glared at Chen Yifei, but he felt happy in his heart while pulling Chen Yifei into the rain with him. The village was pretty big and would probably require two to three hours to cover the whole place. Since the two had no clear plans, Yan Yu just went wherever he thought looked good.
Due to the heavy rain, not many people were in the village but the quietness enhanced the atmosphere. Yan Yu was filled with excitement. No matter how heavy the rain was, Yan Yu kept taking pictures with all his might and Chen Yifei had to remind him to be careful every so often.
In less than half an hour, the two were completely drenched. The temperature on the peak was initially low. With the cold breeze, while they were soaked from head to toe, Chen Yifei continuously sneezed from feeling chilled.
It was only then when Yan Yu realised that Chen Yifei looked like he was about to catch a cold, that he decided to head back.
Chen Yifei let out a long sigh after finally returning indoors, his sports shoes were so wet that water could be squeezed from them. Chen Yifei did not usually do well in the cold, his hands were so cold that they turned purple while Yan Yu was energetic, as usual.
Realising Chen Yifei’s condition, Yan Yu felt a pang of guilt in his heart and asked, “Are your hands cold? Do you want to put them in my pockets? My pockets are very warm.”
For Chen Yifei’s convenience, Yan Yu even carried a chair with him and sat in front of Chen Yifei with his back to him, tugging on his pockets. Chen Yifei hesitated for a second before reaching his hands out and putting them into the pockets while avoiding Yan Yu’s waist. The pockets were indeed very warm.
Yan Yu obediently stayed still so Chen Yifei could warm his hands while he continued his idle chats with the other people in the tour group. The glasses in Yan Yu’s pocket were pressing into Chen Yifei’s hand painfully, so he shifted his hand.
Chen Yifei’s movement made Yan Yu feel ticklish, causing him to cry out in surprise while grabbing Chen Yifei’s hand, laughing “Hey stop moving, boss!! I’m ticklish!!”
Chen Yifei could not help laughing, “Alright, alright, I won’t move.”
After waiting for a while for people to gather, it also seemed like the tour guide would not be back soon. Yan Yu got sleepy as he waited, nodding off as he unintentionally leaned back towards Chen Yifei. Yan Yu’s body was very warm, almost like he was emitting warmth. Although Chen Yifei thought that this position might not be appropriate, he could not bear to leave given how sensitive he was to the cold.
There were tourists who passed by and could not help turning to look at them, some even seemed to be secretly laughing. Chen Yifei felt a bit embarrassed, but seeing that Yan Yu was fast asleep, he didn’t want to wake him.
The muscle Yan Yu had gained from all the fights he had when he was a kid had added a lot of mass on him based on YanYu’s weight that Chen Yifei could clearly feel as he was leaning on him. Since there was nothing for Chen Yifei to lean on, he had to keep his posture upright and still, his whole body becoming stiff.
After ten minutes or so, when the tour guide finally returned, only then did Chen Yifei wake Yan Yu up. The latter sat up as he opened his eyes sleepily. Realising that the tour group was moving on to the next destination, Yan Yu stood up excitedly in an instant, wide awake. He even pulled Chen Yifei along, “Let’s go go go!”
Chen Yifei thought about how Yan Yu had leaned on him for more than half an hour without a word of thanks and then acting as if nothing had happened.
The itinerary for the rest of the day was mostly filled with walking and shopping around in town. Yan Yu had no standards when he went on shopping. Whenever he saw something that caught his eye, he would just throw it in his basket. After walking around, Yan Yu ended up with the most purchases. Even the tour guide’s attitude towards him became a bit warmer.
After a long day out and about, Chen Yifei was extremely exhausted. He fell on the bed the moment they returned to their room.
Yan Yu frowned, “What’s wrong? Didn’t we just get off the ship for just a bit?”
Chen Yifei could only think of sleeping at that moment. “Go and take a hot shower. Don’t get sick,” he managed to remind Yan Yu.
“I think you should take a shower first,” Yan Yu replied.
Chen Yifei thought it made sense. He took off his wet clothes and then took a comfortable hot shower. Chen Yifei had no appetite for dinner and chose to sleep instead.
Yan Yu, on the other hand, still felt pretty energetic, even taking a dip in the hot spring on the top deck.
Unfortunately, Chen Yifei did end up catching a cold. His immune system was not as strong as Yan Yu’s since he still felt cold when wrapped in the blanket, light-headed and dizzy.
Yan Yu quickly realised Chen Yifei’s condition. Yan Yu touched Chen Yifei’s forehead only to find it feverish. Yan Yu felt anxious and a strong pang of guilt instantly. He should not have pushed Chen Yifei into going around with him in the rain.
Yan Yu tried to help Chen Yifei, “Wait here, I’ll find a doctor.”
“You can’t speak the language, right?” Chen Yifei reminded helplessly, “I have medicine in my bag. I’ll be fine after taking some.”
Yan Yu rummaged through the luggage and immediately took out the medicine when he found it. He was a completely different person from when he was being taken care of to taking care of Chen Yifei.
After making sure that Chen Yifei had taken the medicine, Yan Yu sat on the edge of the bed and looked worriedly at him. “Isn’t your immune system too weak? It was only some rain.”
“Do you think everyone grew up fighting?” Chen Yifei argued.
“Fine, fine, fine, you’re a good student.” Yan Yu grumbled, “Stop talking and go to sleep.”
“So, you do know how to take care of others.” Chen Yifei felt the cold towel pressed against his forehead. “Why were you so lazy before?”
“This is nothing compared to what you do,” said Yan Yu. “My older cousin’s daughter came over to stay for a couple of months when she was just three years old. It was so chaotic, I was trained from back then, probably.”
Yan Yu could recall how his little niece had a fever during her stay with him, how he had to carry her on his back to the hospital at two or three in the morning, and that he even told her bedtime stories to coax her to sleep.
Chen Yifei felt a wave of warmth in his heart. He was probably the only one in the world who knew Yan Yu’s genuine side. And Chen Yifei would feel a little disappointed if he wasn’t.
Chen Yifei’s fever broke at around ten at night. Yan Yu let out a sigh of relief. He lifted the towel from Chen Yifei’s forehead while remembering how he had taken care of his little niece. Without thinking, he bent down subconsciously and kissed Chen Yifei’s forehead, “Good ni-”
Yan Yu realised he had screwed up before he finished the word “night”.
Chen Yifei was extremely taken aback, his expression clearly showed his shock. That was the first time Yan Yu had seen such a startled expression on Chen Yifei’s face. He was so embarrassed. He wanted to explain himself, but at the same time, he did not know how to, so he turned red from feeling so suffocated.
Chen Yifei offered, “Habit?”
“... Yeah, my niece loved it.” Yan Yu replied, embarrassed. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s nothing…” Chen Yifei replied.
When Yan Yu turned off the lights to turn in, he reprimanded himself over a thousand times. He was not reprimanding himself for kissing Yan Yu’s forehead subconsciously, but because of how much he enjoyed looking at Chen Yifei’s shocked expression. He, even, felt a sense of achievement for being the one who had caused Chen Yifei to make such an expression.
To be honest, Yan Yu was the first person to kiss Chen Yifei’s forehead aside from his parents. Chen Yifei felt himself relaxing.
Chen Yifei sighed. Knowing Yan Yu, Chen Yifei thought that he probably did not think much about it. But Chen Yifei’s mind couldn’t stop looking deeper into it.
