Chapter 1: What goes around comes around ①

One fine day, during his elementary school days, Yan Yu was subjected to disciplinary action due to a fighting incident. His parents had already given up their hopes for him. During their meeting with the teacher, his parents could only shake their heads, sigh, and left without saying anything.
While serving his punishment of standing outside his homeroom teacher’s office for an hour, Yan Yu wondered, why does school result determine everything? Isn’t he pretty amazing for bashing up a grade 6 top scholar by himself?
Yan Yu was your typical problem student. He had always been the last in class in terms of results since kindergarten, receiving disciplinary action was like nothing to him. His parents were not expecting much for his future. They did not even dare to hope for him to get a small, stable office job as they had. They merely hoped that Yan Yu would, at the least, stay out of jail in the future.
After the punishment, his homeroom teacher forced him into a chair, even though he was too stubborn to show his exhaustion after standing still for one hour. The teacher sighed, “Have you reflected upon your actions?”
Little Yan Yu bit his lips and remained silent.
His homeroom teacher warned earnestly, “Don’t make the same mistake next time. Look at your face, when was it ever not injured?”
The homeroom teacher, unlike all his other subject teachers, was the only one he liked. She was the only one who would not penalise him solely because of his results.
Every time Yan Yu was reprimanded, his teachers would, without fail, compare him to their class president to provoke him. President Chen Yifei was the model student in terms of both results and behaviour. On top of that, he was extremely good-looking and there was no one that disliked him.
The spirit of a child was fragile, and so the word “president” became Yan Yu’s never-ending nightmare.
The homeroom teacher patted Yan Yu’s head, gently smiled, and encouraged him, “Don’t be dejected. Once you grow up and finally enter society, you will see that the courage you now possess is required to make it to the top. Those obedient model students will be the ones working for you.”
Yan Yu’s eyes shone, those words stuck in his mind. That was the first time he had heard that results do not necessarily equate to success.
When he returned to the classroom, Chen Yifei was sitting in his own seat, doing his homework. At such a young age, Chen Yifei already possessed the calmness an adult would have. Given his maturity, Chen Yifei looked very incompatible with his noisy surroundings. Yan Yu walked over overbearingly, looking as if he wanted to beat up the president.
Yan Yu stood in front of Chen Yifei’s seat and aggressively stated, “Chen Yifei! Just because you have good results, doesn’t mean that you’ll definitely be successful in the future! I’ll make you work under me in the future!! Just you wait!!”
Chen Yifei only looked at him coldly and didn’t even bother replying.
Reminiscing, Yan Yu stopped spinning in the leather office chair he was sitting on, tossing the folder in his hands onto the big marble meeting table. Putting on a serious expression, Yan Yu adjusted his expensive tie, positioned the nameplate with “Chairman of the Board” written on it properly on the table, and stared at the man in front of him, who currently had a very complicated expression on his face.
The folder had “Chen Yifei” written on the cover. As the Chairman of a big company, Yan Yu’s memories as a frivolous, young teen came rushing back to him the second he saw Chen Yifei…
What goes around, definitely comes around!!
As Chairman Yan, the main interviewer, had been smiling mysteriously since the beginning, the rest of the interviewers sat stiffly in their seats even before the interview had started, the atmosphere in the meeting room heavy.
Yan Yu looked at Chen Yifei who was in a full working suit, beaming, “President Chen, do you remember me?”
If not for the fact that Yan Yu might become his boss, Chen Yifei would have rolled his eyes eight hundred times. There was no way he would forget the brat that would get into brawls and had the worst results all year round.
Chen Yifei replied with a deep voice, “I do remember.”
Yan Yu smiled from ear to ear, “That is great, President Chen, we haven’t seen each other for about twenty years, right?”
The one thing Yan Yu wanted to do right now, was to kneel and kowtow* to that homeroom teacher who opened the door of possibilities for him. Yan Yu had treated her words of encouragement as his life goal and unwittingly worked his way up to becoming the Chairman of a big company.
(T/N*: kowtow, the act of kneeling and touching the ground with the forehead in respect or submission)
(PR/N: I kowtow to the Translator…)
Seeing as to how Yan Yu was so pleased with himself right now, Chen Yifei could only feel helplessness in his heart. Although he had never minded the words of the frivolous teen back then, to meet him again in such a setting, he could only blame the gods for such a fate.
The interviewers could not watch further, and asked carefully, “Chairman Yan, shall we start the interview…? There are a few more after him…”
Yan Yu replied, “Go ahead and interview the rest. I will interview this person myself.”
The interviewers protested, “But…”
“Go. “
After everyone had left the meeting room, Yan Yu let out a breath. With no care for his image, Yan Yu put his feet on the table, showing his polished leather shoes, and smiled, “President Chen, it is only the two of us now. We are like a family behind closed doors anyway, don’t hesitate and say what you want to.”
Chen Yifei stared at him coldly, and asked slowly, “Don’t hesitate to ask if you* have any questions.”
(T/N*: “您” is being used here. It still means “you”, but this is used when speaking to someone you need to show respect to.
Yan Yu felt intense satisfaction hearing how Chen Yifei spoke respectfully to him. Yan Yu resisted his urge to smile and answered, “Wasn’t your previous job pretty good? What brought you here?”
If he had known that Yan Yu was the Chairman of this company, Chen Yifei would never have come. But since he was already here, he had no choice, “Because of money.”
Yan Yu laughed, “I thought President Chen had no desire and wouldn’t be interested in money.”
Chen Yifei smiled, unbothered, “I am very interested.”
Yan Yu stared at Chen Yifei for a moment. Although it was true that he had hated Chen Yifei in the past, the indifferent but charming aura could not be overlooked. Even his handsome face that had always garnered attention from girls next door, remained exceptional.
Yan Yu asked, “Why don’t you tell me what your thoughts are about me?”
Chen Yifei had already guessed that Yan Yu would not be letting him off easy since he was probably just enjoying himself. Chen Yifei felt that all the preparations he had done for the interview were all for naught.
Chen Yifei replied, “My thoughts and impression of you are only limited to our elementary school days, so I do not have the right to judge you right now. But seeing that you are an owner of a business, I am sure you have many merits that exceed others.”
Yan Yu sneered, “You are really great with words, aren’t you? But save these pretty words for someone else, alright?”
Chen Yifei stared at him, “That was truly what I thought.”
Yan Yu snorted, “Forget it, enough about this. You should know that this job is not easy, right? You said you can’t be the judge of my character, but I think you should have a brief idea of the type of person I am. It won’t be easy being my assistant.”
Chen Yifei replied, “I know.”
“Then why did you still apply?”
“Because this position provides many employee benefits.”
Yan Yu added, “You could have easily gotten a rich sugar mummy to provide for you with that face of yours.”
“Thank you for your compliment.”
Yan Yu continued, “I will only stress this once more, my assistant must be at least more competent than I am. I require my assistant to not only be excellent in his work but in other aspects, as well. Even if you pass this interview and get fully employed as my assistant, you must go through a month’s trial period and training.”
Chen Yifei smiled softly, “I understand what you are saying.”
Chen Yifei was, indeed, desperate for this job. The expenditure of his family has increased too suddenly lately. There was no way he could have maintained that kind of spending with his previous job.
Yan Yu finally got serious and asked Chen Yifei various professional questions. The interview went on for about an hour before Yan Yu let him go.
Chen Yifei let out a long sigh in the break room and saw the other interviewees coming out of the meeting room one after another.
After ten minutes, a man came out to announce the results, “Thank you, everyone, for your interest in our company. I will now be announcing three short-listed candidates. These candidates will be taking part in our one-month-long training, and we will be officially employing the candidate who successfully passes the training after the month. I express my deepest apologies to those whose names are not announced. Your expenditure during the interview period will be compensated accordingly.”
The man announced three names and Chen Yifei was one of them. In a heavy atmosphere, he remained with the other two candidates and waited for their boss to give them instructions and pep talk.
Yan Yu came soon after to briefly explain their training schedule, location and accommodation. Towards the end, he said, “I only need one assistant, the other two will be assigned to my subordinates’ departments. As for who would be chosen, it will be dependent on your performance this month.”
After the short briefing session ended, the three candidates had to move their baggage to their new accommodation. Chen Yifei was planning to take a taxi back to pack his things but was stopped by Yan Yu on his way out.
Yan Yu said, “President Chen, I am looking forward to your performance!”
Chen Yifei understood Yan Yu’s feelings of wanting him to work under Yan Yu. Especially since Yan Yu did, indeed, promise to make Chen Yifei work under him in the past. It no longer seemed like an empty promise, “Thank you.”
“After all, their intelligence is nothing compared to yours.” Yan Yu smiled, “But they have experience as assistants, and you don’t, so don’t get complacent.”
“Thank you for your concern.”
Yan Yu replied, “I’ve already told you to stop with those shallow words. Oh yeah, do you want me to give you a lift?”
Chen Yifei replied indifferently, “There is no need to trouble you.”
Yan Yu felt so refreshed from seeing Chan Yifei’s responses. Yan Yu loved how Chen Yifei could only act cold despite disliking him because there was nothing Chen Yifei could have done to get rid of him. Yan Yu laughed, “It is no trouble at all, it’s on the way anyway. The address written on your resume is really near my house.”
Chen Yifei finally gave in, “... Alright then.” His family was in need of money anyway, he would save up whenever he could.
As the two arrived at the car park, a few cars with unbelievably eye-catching colours could be seen. Yan Yu twirled his car keys and asked with a smile, “Which one do you like? I’ll let you choose.”
Chen Yifei could guess Yan Yu’s reasoning behind wanting to give him a lift, “... Red, I guess.”
“Okay, yellow it is.” Yan Yu opened the door of the yellow car and sat inside. He then said, all smiles, “Hop on.”
Chen Yifei gave him a fake smile, opened the door on the other side of the car, and got in. Yan Yu’s mood was superb throughout the journey, maxing the volume of the rock music playing in his car. Chen Yifei was agitated by the overly loud music, the unstable speed of the car making him slightly carsick.
To distract himself, Chen Yifei asked, “What happened to your previous assistant?”
“Oh, you meant Xiao-Zheng?” Yan Yu’s mood seemed to turn sour, “I probably expected too much from him. Not to say he was bad, it was just that I couldn’t get along with him. He was being too careful. He didn’t dare to look at me again just because I had reprimanded him a few times. He’d even tremble when talking to me. I need someone who is stronger-willed.”
Chen Yifei had a feeling that he would not be able to get along with people like Yan Yu either, but for the sake of this job, he was very willing to try.
Other than that, there was something Chen Yifei could not understand about this position. It was specified that Yan Yu’s assistant would also work as his personal driver.
“Why must you make your assistant your driver, as well? Can’t you hire a few more drivers?”
“All employees working for my company are extremely capable. I need quality, not quantity. Besides, don’t you know how expensive it is to hire new people? How would a pretty boy who hasn’t worked in this society before understand my feelings?” Yan Yu continued, “I don’t like wasting human resources. Driving doesn’t take much effort, does it? I am sure my assistant is capable enough to undertake that responsibility as well.”
If not for the high pay, Chen Yifei would definitely consider that as overworking and taking advantage of employees. Besides, Yan Yu was not merely asking for a driver with a basic driving license, but also the license for driving a yacht - apparently, going out to the sea was a personal hobby of Chairman Yan.
Yan Yu asked, “Do you know how to drive a yacht?”
“No.”
“Then, I suggest you learn how to properly this month.” Yan Yu laughed, “If you are employed and have good performance, I may even get you a yacht as your year-end bonus.”
Chen Yifei did not want such things. Even if he got it, there was no way he could maintain it.
A few minutes later, the car finally stopped in front of Chen Yifei’s apartment building. Chen Yifei alighted, turned around and said, “Sorry for the trouble.”
Yan Yu laughed, “What are you being courteous for, President Chen? See you tomorrow.”
Watching as that brightly coloured racing car got further, Chen Yifei let out a deep sigh. He had absolutely no confidence in being employed, nor did he have the confidence to get along with this boss even if he was employed.
Fate was, indeed, a miraculous thing; was what Yan Yu was thinking on his way back home. Yan Yu had treated Chen Yifei as his motivation to do better, but now, Chen Yifei had to make an effort to please him to get employed.
Yan Yu had not been this happy for a long time. The thought of seeing Chen Yifei speaking to him respectfully but unwillingly, his obedient expressions… It felt like all of his hard work was worth it.
In reality, their houses were not close at all. Yan Yu had to go all the way back in the opposite direction, and even got into a traffic jam on his way back.
Surprisingly, Yan Yu, who was prone to road-raging, did not feel an ounce of annoyance today. Even the drivers who would violate the rules and overtook his car seemed to be extra affable in Yan Yu’s eyes.
I see. Hiring an assistant, he says :)
